He was bailed to be detained at a medium secure psychiatric unit on Merseyside where he has been on remand since 31 December.

Abram, wearing a dark suit and tie and flanked by two police officers spoke only to confirm his name, age and address and to confirm that he understood the charges facing him.

He is charged with attempting to murder Mr and Mrs Harrison at their home on the 34-acre Friar Park estate in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, on 30 December last year.

He is also charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Harrison, 56, having unlawfully entered the house, and with unlawfully wounding 51-year-old Mrs Harrison.

George Harrison spent several days in hospital after being stabbed in the chest.
